The current global volatility has seen some suppliers struggle to maintain supply of products to the market and in turn try and fall back on items that no longer conform (legacy & obsolete products) to the current standards, that being MASH. There may be some supply chain challenges in the forseeable future, but while conforming product is available standards should be adhered too.
Waka Kotahi have issued a letter (Text below) to the industry detailing the protocol to be taken in these times, ‘while compliant products are available they are to be used’. It is only to ask the question of the supplier if there is availability, which it is.

Dear Sir/Madam
Supply of MASH Road Safety Hardware
Waka Kotahi is aware that the supply of road safety hardware to the NZ market is coming under pressure from global logistics constraints. This may affect the ability of System Suppliers and System Installers to meet contracted agreements to supply MASH compliant road safety hardware for new construction and maintenance projects.
System Installers may request dispensation to substitute MASH end terminals with NCHRP 350 end terminals only where supply of MASH products is not available from any NZ supplier. The supply issue must be confirmed by the System Installer in writing (email is acceptable), following contact with the NZ suppliers (including but not limited to CSP Pacific, Ingal Civil and Steelgal).
This dispensation must be sought from the Waka Kotahi Project Manager (for NOC contracts the Project Manager may be the Contract Manager) and recorded in the contract’s quality assurance records.
Yours sincerely
